Thanks for all the info. Dave Hogan has helped me offlist with all kinds of things to consider.
The work system is a MacPro mid 2010 upgraded to 12 core 3.33 GHz with 24 GB ram. GPU is Radeon 5770 1024MB. One work system has a GTX-680 which I've been eyeing for a while. I know there are better GPUs that have been mentioned in this thread but they don't spend much money on upgrades.
I've been doing 4K with the Radeon GPU for a couple years. It's a tight rope of renders to get smooth playback but my show are relatively straight forward so it has been manageable. I would expect the latest Avid is more power hungry so I might find it cumbersome with the Radeon GPU but at least I know where to go to improve performance as needed.
It's going to be a while before I move the Avid version as we may be okay with 8_9_4 for now. More will be revealed on that front.

The cheese grater is a very capable machine, but it would need a beefier gpu to be fully happy. You should upgrade it to a RX580 Sapphire, the one Apple sold with egpu kit for a short while. Actually, they even qualified it officially for use in a Mac Pro a few weeks back.
It would need 10.3.6 tu run happily and natively. Best would be to upgrade your os to that version by using the installer on the App Store. It contains a firmware update for the Mac Pro - yep, for a decade old machine!I hope your Mac is already running its OS from a ssd drive, it's easy to install one in the optical bay as you probably don't have two DVD burners.Pierre, fan of the cheese Mac.
