Many thanks for the constructive suggestions. It turns out that Media Composer 7.0.4 will accept 9 of the 11 recording modes of the Canon XA-20.
My client initially supplied AVCHD media using one of the two unsupported format AVCHD formats. (of course!)
Here are the two Canon XA-20 AVCHD recording modes that do NOT import into Media Composer 7.0 4:
- AVCHD 28 Mbps LPCM (59.94P) 1920x1080 Liner PCM audio
- AVCHD 28 Mbps (59.94P) 1920x1080 Dolby Digiital audio
