Thanks for the constructive suggestions. At this time the client is reluctant to provide the entire SD card contents, so AMA linking is not an option.
I am pursuing third-party conversion software to see if that works. One candidate solution is Brorsoft's MTS/M2TS Converter. The free trial version embeds a watermark in the middle of the converted video, but the purchase price for the full version is quite reasonable.
