I think Tommy had it - I swapped in a new USB extension (powered, of course) this afternoon, and ran through some 'busy work' on the computer for about 20 minutes - with no sign at all of a 'sticky' mouse or keyboard.
I'll do a regular edit session in there when I get a chance to triple-check, but I think the mystery's been solved!
