Or you can buy the $50 Compressor. The Apple codecs only come with the Pro Apple Apps. AFAIK

Are you talking about the $300 FCPX? I have to purchase FCPX just to be able to then update the pro codecs, as a way to restore ProRes functionality to Media Composer?

OK - I added FCPX to my High Sierra test volume and updated the pro codecs from the App Store ... and everything came back.
