Did the text below ever made it to the list?
(I'm on Mac for mail, and everything, including half finished draft copies end up in my client, but got a failed message and can't see it in the archives….)

if your eyes are as bad as mine the following trick:
Do NOT create a full bw ramp, but do a small ramp (from grey to not so grey) and put a long (10 sec or so) fade to black on it..
Also make sure you turn off dithering for the banding to become more visible.
Import in avid (NOT ama link), and turn off color mapping. (So, assume it's at correct levels.) This to avoid re-mapping and thus probably dithering.
On my Windows system with DNxHD 220x:
PNG (16 bits) AMA linked does 8 bits RT rendering on playback, no matter the quality settings. But it does take the full 10 (or 16) bits on rendering
'normal' AMA and internal 10 bits media behave as expected.
Playback of rendered and original 10 bits material, as well as AMA 10 bits video, display as 10 bits, no matter the quality settings.
YMMV.
