Here's an additional comment from the Editing-List where I also posted this question:
According to the Avid manual, precomputes are definitely affected by timeline video quality settings: Ensuring the Quality Level of Precomputed Clips Before you export or output your sequence, you must ensure that all your precomputed clips have been rendered using the desired quality settings.
Your Avid editing application cannot always recognize that it needs to re-render effects when you change a quality setting. You must manually purge and re-render precomputed clips to ensure that all effects render with the desired quality. In general, you need to purge and re-render if you have rendered effects while working in a lower quality setting and have then switched to a higher quality setting.
Questions:
When you render (pre-compute) you can select the data-rate. Are folks saying the Playback Quality selection in some way also affects the pre-compute? If YES, I assume the Quality selector affects image resolution: 100%, 50%, and 25%. Correct?
When you do a mix-down, is this treated as a pre-compute? Unlike the other pre-computes, one is not given the option to purge mix-downs prior to final export in MCF.
That's no problem if the only factor affecting mix-down quality is the mix-down data-rate that one can set.
But, if Playback Quality selection in some way affects the mix-down quality, then the inability to purge them can be a real problem.

Steve Mullen

Clearly either differing versions behave differently and/or Mac/PC platforms may behave differently. This seems like it should be easily answered by Avid Tech.

We found in 8.5 x that the timeline settings DID affect the video output in digital cut… Not sure if this is fixed in a later versions.
So if the timeline is set to 8 bit but the Digital cut was set to 10 bi then the output was actually 8 bit.

It does not help if you switch mailing lists so people can't read what is said before.
To recap: In some situations (read, when you're on Mac on 'some' version) a mix down to a DNxHD 10 bits will result in 8 bits info inside a 10 bits codec when not in green 10 bits modus.
Feed that to your Avid tech.

Actually, I know the timeline view settings do not affect renders.
Set your timeline to the lowest quality. Now look at an unrendered effect and you will see it is aliased. Render it. Now it won't be aliased.
