Re: [Avid-L2] Avid Perpetual License vs. Ultimate Add Ons?

Hello all, hello Avid (supposed this is read by Marianna/Avid),

We are looking at a serious issue: 8bit vs. 10bit exports. And no: you, Avid, cannot retract yourself from this by referring to the manual or deep-hidden kb-articles — which even doesn't state this.

As John Moore said truly: "The first step solving anything is admitting there is a problem."

Marianna: Avid-L figuring out there is a problem does not put anyone on this end in the position to 'admit' the problem. That's on Avid's end. Aside that, we are also still looking at other residues from the 90's like "HDTitleFilter" in 2018 (we had an exchange on this one).

These issues needs to get addressed by Avid.

I honestly don't care about new license schemes, being a customer dating back to the 90's – I want a reliable application. An application that's worth all the money I spent.
I am not voicing questions at your presumably once again huge booth at NAB, rather
I am busy working, backing once more my employees and relay the news: Avid does not work without adjustments or post-processing: "Watch out!"

I was relying on your software, still do, alas, that doesn't cut the deal.

In the presence of just those disappointments in Avid's software we figured so far and the newly revealed ones: I needed venting this.

Happy NAB y'all!

That is not how I read the answer.  At the end it specifically says the software add-ons, (phrase find, script sync and symphony) are not included.  That means no symphony as far as I can tell.:

Afaik any add on fully bought such as Symphony and PhraseFind are retained for perpetual license owners. Nothing changes.

Can I still buy a Media Composer perpetual license or will I need to transition

So if I continue my normal annual subscription I in essence lose the symphony dongle's ability to run symphony.  I have two dongles with symphony built in and a symphony software activation license.  This sounds like if I continue to renew them I lose the ability to have symphony color correction unless I pay an additional fee.  This is less than a year after Avid offered the symphony option as a one time 99 dollar charge.  I assume that if I run older Avid versions the symphony will still work as it has but as soon as I venture into 2018..4 I have to pay extra to use symphony option.

I saw a posting mentioning shapes in the color corrector with tracking.  Does anyone have further information regarding this?  If there are serious improvements in the color corrector then I could see paying some more but if it's just lip stick on a pig well that won't fly.  Hey did I just say a pig won't fly?

I'm going to stay open minded about this new stuff but it does seem funny that for years people kept saying having media composer and symphony was just too confusing to follow so the big news a few years back was everything is named media compose or media composer with symphony.  That was supposed to simplify the product line.  Seems like we've gone back in the other direction.  Media Composer First, Media Composer Subscription, Media Composer Perpetual, Media Composer Perpetual with add ons, Media Composer Ultimate Subscription only.  But if you have a perpetual dongle you can continue with Media Composer and add on symphony for a fee.

Given how easy it is to export 10 bit out of Avid this is all making sense to me!!!  ;-0
