A group of BWAVs would be a set of files, each a monophonic BWAV. A polyphonic BWAV would be a single file containing multiple channels.

I remember I had to uncheck it to get things to import normal. 

There has been a version of MC that truncated files imported with 'Autodetect'.

I wasn't dealing with 7.1 and just wanted to end up with the mono stems fro 5.1 but with Poly Bwav checked I got odd naming of the actual tracks with it duplicating the left channel name in both the left and right track. 

Since a clip in MC cannot have per-channel metadata, but only per-clip metadata, it takes just the metadata from A1.
