Fast way about it is to AMA-link to those, then consolidate, since AMA-linking will recognize it as a 7.1 group. Then choose Clip->Modify->Set Multichannel Audio and designate as 7.1. I _think_ MC will recognize and import 7.1 in SMPTE order: L R C Lfe Lss Rss Lsr Rsr, but I am not 100% sure of this, so it might be wise to test.
I also think current versions of MC will also do this via traditional import if you tick the box "autodetect BWF groups", and I _think_ this imports in SMPTE order as well. Would need to double check.
On older versions, in the past, I have used a trick for this, which is to rename the individual channel files prior to import. See http://www.jobterburg.nl/Publications/SurroundRename.pdf
Also be very aware of the LFE panning issue if you are going to try to use the already imported mono clips in a timeline — as you were alluding to. Meaning that with regular 5.1/7.1 panning, you cannot pan any clip or track to the LFE channel _only_, it will always be in addition to a panning setting across the five or seven main channels — which changes your mix. There is a fix for that, though: you'll need to open the console, type 'audioextras' and tick the box that says "Allow LFE only channels", then right click the .1 channel track in the mixer and set it to 'LFE only'. Now that channel will have no panner anymore, and its content will be routed straight into the LFE channel (as the LFE mix signal should).
Hope this helps.
