I've tapped my local heros and there is a CalDigit Card and there is a Sonnet 4 port card. The Cal Digit has 2 USB Type A connections, a USB type C connection and an Esata connection. The Sonnet has 4 standard USB 3 Type style connections. I've googled and USB 3.1 has double the speed plus enhanced power on the cable. I've been running one of the Sonnet cards on a MacPro 2010 at work and it handles our Graid etc... USB 3 needs.
So given I have a mid 2012 MacPro 12 core 2.66Ghz and an Cyclone Microsystems Expansion chassis with 2 available 4 lane slots will that configuration even allow me to take advantage of the USB 3.1 speed boost? The Expansion chassis houses two Titan X GPUs and a 1600 watt power supply. The chassis is connect to the MacPro 16 lane slot.
I think the Sonnet will handle my USB 3 connection needs for the current crop of drives I deal with but would that be a short sighted purchase. I'm assuming the USB 3.1 will throttle back it's speed if plugged into a USB type a port but I'm just assuming. I've read the future of USB 3.1 is more for mobile and laptop devices but what does this collective brain trust think? TIA
