Quicktime is still supported by Apple and others, and has become essential in the industry, but Windows support for Quicktime has never been (and really can't be) as complete and stable as it is on Macs.
It is important to distinguish between the application Quicktime for Windows 7, the Quicktime file container, and Apple codecs, like ProRes and AIFF.
Quicktime for Windows 7 is still available and working in the current Windows OS but "unsupported" by Apple. It can still be installed and generally appears to work. I would recommend installing it even if you don't intend on using it since it will install codec components that may be useful. I suggest using VLC for Quicktime playback as I personally can't stand Media Player. Simply installing it is NOT a security risk.
Quicktime format files are widely supported for playback by Windows applications including Microsoft Media Player, the default player app, and professional post-production apps like Adobe products. Here is Avid's current stance:
Apple ProRes is not supported for *encoding* in Windows 10 as far as I can tell. I don't think it has ever been. It is possible at the app level and many third parties have done it.
I've used this before:
They do not list Windows 10 (or Avid) as a compatible product. It may still work but I have not tested. At the moment, I'm not sure there is an Apple licensed product for Quicktime/ProRes encoding running on Windows 10.
That said, I cannot recommend the switch to Windows just for the power boost. Quicktime will be the least of your problems if you are Mac born and bred. You are in for a world of hurt and frustration. If you are a power user like Bouke, or myself, you'll be fine. Frustrated maybe, but you'll get through it. But if you are alone and in unfamiliar territory, you will spend the next few years regretting your decision.
We've been here before. Yes, PCs are more powerful at the moment and the Apple trashcan sucks. I desperately hope Apple fixes this problem. Apple's recent announcement suggests that they intend to. In the meantime, I intend to muddle through. After 30 years of working with both platforms, I know that the grass is not, in fact, greener on the other side, whichever side you are on now. Stick with the OS you know.
My stop-gap for now is upgraded aluminum Mac Pros. Others will spend the money for the current Mac Pro and get on with life a little poorer, but happy. ;)

Now that Windows no longer supports QuicktimeThis is bullshit. Apple sucks (Wes is invited to chime in).Quicktime plugin for browsers is discontinued, but the normal QT platform is still fully supported by Apple (and probably required by law.).However, Apple sees to 'want/desire' to move people away from it.Get a PC, install QT, and be happy to have a machine that outperforms a Mac by 400% compared to cost.
