[Avid-L2] Color Space for UHD theoretical and practical application?

 

I have been of the understanding that 4K was more but not better pixels.  HDR seems to be better pixels but is that true or is it just the contrast range improvement of how the same pixels are interpreted?

ITU-R Recommendation BT.2020, more commonly known by the abbreviations Rec. 2020 or BT.2020, defines various aspects of UHDTV such as display resolution, frame rate, chroma subsampling, bit depth, and color space.[1] It was posted on the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) website on August 23, 2012

So if the spec for UHD or 4K is Rec 2020 is that considered a "better" pixel than a Rec 709 pixel?  I realize 2020 has a greater color gamut so it can produce more colors in theory.  I deliver 4K in Rec 709 as all my infrastructure is Rec 709.  Are there any consumer monitors that are Rec 2020 displays?  I had thought that the consumer world was still Rec 709 even on the 4K TVs.  Clearly I need to understand this better. 

I know the Sony BVM OLED can be set for Rec 2020 and Tektronix and other scopes can be set for 2020.  I don't have access to any of these devices.  Given Netflix accepts Rec 709 I have not had to upgrade our work system but when the time comes for a 2020 delivery what are people doing to properly work for a 2020 color space?
