The Alpha channel has always been locked in the titles. If you want to affect it you have to step in, copy both tracks, step out and cut them into 2 video tracks. Then you can apply a matte key to the alpha track and do whatever you want. Just one of the many ways that not having alpha support in the timeline sucks.

Once upon a time, if you stepped into a title or matte key, the nested elements were nicely labelled. Now they are not. OK for old hands but not good for teaching :-(.
