Re: [Avid-L2] Mac permissions issue

Hey Lou,

If you have changed the permissions to 'ignore ownership on this volume' (like Ross suggested) and you are still getting that message, then it MIGHT be you just need to eject it and try again. I've seen this happen (like you are describing) - and I haven't gotten to the bottom of it. For me, when it happens it also won't let me eject the drive. So I shut down the machine. Start up with drive disconnected. Log in to get to the desktop, connect the drive and try to erase files again.
If that fails I'm with you in thinking that the drive has something going wrong on it.

Drive is formatted OS Extended.  Here is an example.  I try to trash two mp4 files I don't need.  I am asked for password.  I do that and get "Item "xxx" is locked. Do you want to move it to the transh anyway?'

I selet continue (choices are skip and stop as well)

Then I get:
The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items.

And this is the same for anything I want to trash.  If I want to drag a file into this drive, it just won't go.  Nothing happens.

All very odd as I say, this has been a workhorse with no issues until last week.

Maybe the drive is going bad.

If that's not it, try disabling permissions entirely on the drive. You do that by getting info on the drive itself and unticking the checkbox at the bottom of the info window.

I recommend this for all project drives unless you happen to be working in a secure facility. Making this change should solve your problem, assuming you have permission to make the change.

No, the lock on permissions in the Get Info window does not stay unlocked. You must unlock it every time.

As for NTFS, I suggest checking. It's possible the drive has always been NTFS and what has changed is that your NTFS driver is no longer working.

If none of those things solve the problem, give us some idea what permissions settings in Get Info actually say and maybe we can help further.

Cheers,
