Re: [Avid-L2] Counteracting a Zoom?

Thanks for the specific details.  It's tedious to experiment around in the Avid 4K project as everything is slow to update, track and render.  I have brute forced it with a Reformat Pan and Zoom and it's better than I thought.  If time permits I will give the BCC Optical Stabilizer a try.  Is the Optical Stabilizer available in BCC 8.2?  I'm locked out in a render right now and can't check the effects list.

I have successfully used this effect to counteract a zoom. YMMV. I failed to mention: in your settings, make sure change the Stabilize setting to Translation + Rotation + Zoom.

The BCC effect is pretty robust. For your application, the default mode of Stabilize will eliminate all camera movement in the shot. The other mode, Smooth, will, as the name implies, smooth the motion of the camera movement in the shot. For instance, if you have handheld shot with an unsteady pan, the Smooth mode will turn the jitter into butter. It may take some processing time, but the payoff is big.

Thx I will give that a try but is "Optical Stabilization" going to counteract a zoom in?  I can see where it might stabilize the shot over all but what I'm being asked to do is in essence a zoom out effect on the shot to do the opposite of what the zoom in is doing so the shot holds a more or less constant frame size on the face.

This is not my area of experience so any suggestions are welcome.

If you want to stay in Avid, and you have Boris FX, the BCC Optical Stabilizer should do the trick. Set the Mode to Stabilize (the default). Go the first frame of the clip and tick the Analyze box to begin the magic. In my experience, the BCC effect generates better results than the built-in Region Stabilize effect.

Got a shot with a slo zoom from head CU to tighter head CU.  Move is about 8 seconds.  I've been asked to "counteract" the zoom.  I take that to mean I blow up the early part of the shot to match the final framing of the shot.  The move is reasonably smooth and I'm going to try a reformat pan and scan effect that starts blown up and ends normal.  I don't think this will be transparent but I'm going to give it a shot.

Does anybody with more VFX chops know of a plugin or process to automate the counteraction of a slo zoom in?  TIA
