I've been using safe color for a long time and never noticed the very slight lift of 7.5 vs/ 7.4 Luma L. I've always set RGB to 16-235 and never got flaggged for the slight lift in black sections before so I'm pretty sure this is relatively new behavior, perhaps starting in 8.5.
Is you choice to play out and recapture to another system predicated on the advantage of using the more effective external legalizer?
When playing out to a 2nd system do you run in any kind of vtr emulation mode so you can assure proper time code on the newly created master file?

I've seen the lift you are talking about. But I didn't see it until a 4K project as I never used the safe color effect prior to that. We always used external legalizers going to tape and we play out and capture on another system for file creation. Since we don't have a baseband video 4K setup, this is now an issue.
