We would play these back and output the audio and video as uncompressed 10bit NTSC in Serial Digital format, Then right into final cut still SDI in audio and video and then convert to ProRes 422 HQ.
For the whole conversion process we charge $100 per hour of real playing time. We do trim off leaders, bars and tone, etc. unless you want those left on. We would normally leave on slates.
This is the best method for quality since as it is played it exits the deck as SDI never to see analog again. We then put the digital files on your supplied hard drive.
We've done lots of this and are very successful with it.
You can simply Fedex the tapes and a hard drive to us.
Hopefully the Umatics have had human comfort.

Subject: [Avid-L2] U-matic to digital transfers, NYC area
A guitar-player friend of mine has some rare U-matic tapes of Bill Monroe live performances. Professionally shot shortly before he died. Any recommendations for transferring to digital files? He lives in Tarrytown, NY. Thanks in advance.
