Re: [Avid-L2] better graphics card

The big challenge is your OS level.  If you were to upgrade to something like Maverics or newer, you can use a variety of graphics cards, even PC ones (if you don't mind losing the Option boot features.)  Probably be much better performance for a more optimized 64 bit OS experience anyway.

Best bang for cheap is probably a Quadro 4000.  The PC version can be had on eBay for about 100 bucks.  The mac version about double. There is a huge difference in render speed once you get to a card with 2GB of ram or more on Avid V 8.5 or newer.  And the card is not power hungry.  Only needs one extra power connector.

Terry Curren posted info on a really awesome Nvidia card a couple months back that can support 4K video as well.  I don't recall the exact model number.

I am currently running Avid and AE 2015 using OS X 10.5 on a Mac Pro Early 2009 edition. I've got 40 GB Ram and all was going great for a while. But lately as I've upgraded AE and Avid its starting to slow down in the video department. AE is chugging with refresh and some latency in Avid. I have ATU Radeon HD 5770 1024MB to run to Cinema Displays. I only have the one slot available for a video card. This one is probably 4 or 5 years old. Is there a better, faster card I should be using now that can take up the one slot and give me better response in AE? Or is it likely not the video card?

thanks
