[Avid-L2] Re: Resolve update from Editor's Lounge event

Over and over folks say Resolve is "like" FCPX. It is not. It has the same model editing concept as MC, FCP7, and PP. In one mode (arrow) you can drag edges, but you will leave a gap. FCPX always ripples. If you delete a clip a gap is left (Lift) — this not true of FCPX.

There is another mode for other trimming functions. And yet another mode for "splitting" clips. Of course there are track selectors.

BM makes a big deal that Resolve was designed for "professional" graders and editors, by which they mean the folks in Hollywood. So the fact its NLE will be familiar to MC editors makes perfect sense. Those MC editors who have gone to PP will also find it familiar.

The largest group of editors are those who use FCPX. If they came from MC they'll feel like they've gone back to model hell. The huge group of new editors will just say "what the ****."

The other problem for Mac users, is that Resolve was — like MC and PP — not designed for OS X. So one's intuitive move is often not correct.

Finally, Resolve's H.264 decoder is very very slow. It's graphics is way behind what Apple has included in FCPX. So on the same system Resolve is painfully not fluid when editing. Bring in a ProRes clip and Resolve feels better. But the kind of RT graphics in FCPX always makes it a delight to return to it.

That does't mean FCPX is prefect. The MC CC is far better — which says a lot about Apple missing the mark. The use of a database rather than Bins is terrible for the visual editor. And FCPX editors do admit there is a problem editing on top of a music/narration bed.
