Different problem (Nitris DX hardware not connecting) but I've seen some weird sh*t from 8.5.1. MCState seems to be the fix.

I did some 'voodoo' stuff already like deleting the user's folder on the project - which now creates a problem with the waveform cache - though it doesn't show, it insists that the cache is there and cannot be written or deleted.
Changing project user on the system didn't make a difference, nor did changing OS system user did.
All other applications have total access to the local media. No MC project has access to any drives.
Deleted MCState for all users; ran alldrives. Problem solved. Seems obvious in retrospect - thanks for setting me straight!
Even the waveform cache issue seems to be resolved.
