Re: [Avid-L2] Is Adding Custom Columns really quirky?

Or start with a more comprehensive view (like Statistics), add your custom column to that, delete the columns you don't want (who needs In-Out etc?) and save as a new view. You don't need to start with a Custom view.

Avid's been like this for a long time.  Saving and loading a bin view that includes the custom column is one way to see a custom column in a new bin, as you have found.  You can also copy/move a clip that has data in the custom column to the new bin, then the custom column will show up in the choose columns list there.

I've been reading about using custom columns for relinking and decided to give it a try.  I'm on Ver. 6.5.4.7.  I see on the recently posted 8.5.1 What's New that in 8.5 the process has been simplified but I'm required to run 6.5.4.7 for most projects.  I go to text view, choose "custom" layout and then tap on the headings bar and type in "Link".  Link appears at the top of the column and I can look in the choose columns menu and I see it at the bottom of the list.  At this point I save the project and go to another bin and go to choose columns but I don't see Link as a choice.  If I go back to the bin I created the Link column in I can see the column choice while in that bin.  I can save a layout called link and then open that in another bin and then the column choice of Link appears in the choose columns.  I would think once I created a custom column it would appear in the choose columns list in all bins regardless of the template chosen.  I figured I would add a custom column and then just go to an existing bin layout and just add link to the columns but that doesn't seem to work.  It seems that I have to start with the new Link layout and then add all the other columns I want to that.  I've tried this on a few systems and they all behave in the quirky to me manner.

Is this the way it's supposed to work?
