[Avid-L2] Re: OT:4K and new TV's...OT

Tom,

How close were you to that 55" TV? Where you would sit at home? I'll bet not. If you were, the normal compression blockiness would drive you crazy.

One of the interesting notes I brought home from the HPA Tech Retreat (think TED talks of our industry) was that most of the studio's testing led to the conclusion that shooting 4K, finishing in 2K for theatrical and 1080 for home, then letting the 4K TV at home handle the uprez yields no perceptible difference from an entirely 4K pipeline. Disney is mattering theatrical at 2K 10 bit Log, and TV at 1080 10 bit Log. They have found they can pull an HDR master from that later if needed. Yes, even Star Wars was mastered at 2K. And Disney is the most motivated of anyone to future proof their content.

Sorry for the OT ladies and gents,

So my Plasma burned out and now I have to get a new TV. After looking at 55 inch 1080 panels and 4K panels I've come to an interesting quandary.

I've discovered in the 1080 LED's I can see the pixel grid vs. the 4K LED sets having a finer pixel grid. After looking at 1080 and 4K

sets side by side, I drove the salesman mad needing to turn off all the processed image settings, I prefer the 4K panels even on 1080p material.

The Samsung's, Sony's and LG's seem to have excellent up scaling. Any thoughts on this and have others noticed this? I honestly could careless

about 4K material although Best Buy does now carry 4K Blu-Rays or whatever they are called. So atleast that offers a little 4K material, not too badly compressed, worth

purchasing if a movie I care about is re-mastered for it. The Martian in 4K would be sweet to have.
