Re: [Avid-L2] Re: avid editors' opinion of adobe premiere?

Thanks, Luca.  This project has been in the pipeline for awhile, and before Avid introduced its custom raster sizes, Premiere seemed liked the only reasonable choice.  Now it's up in the air again, and I definitely need to do a fair bit of testing before deciding one way or the other.

I agree that 5 streams of DnxHD is certainly not too much to expect from a decent Avid workstation, but things really seem to bog down once you start adding animattes on different layers.

Cheers,

Hi Michael, I've cut on Avid several products similiar to the one You're facing, before custom project size I had to simulate in HD and online in After Effects, with the latest releases of MC You can create a project with custom size up to 5k-something, 5276x1920 should be allowed, which makes things easier, can't be more precise as I haven't had such a gig lately, and only quickly tested resolution indipendence on Avid for the sake of it; since You're familiar with Avid, and therefore more productive, running Your own tests before making a decision wouldn't hurt. Should You eventually change Your mind and go the Avid route I suggest working with the composer window in single monitor mode and having source clips in their own pop-up monitors, in the old Avid Xpress fashion, a three monitors setup might help. On a beefy workstation five picture in pictures on top of each other is not a major problem: You do not need too many renderings, only the one or two top layers, and render will be fast anyway, provided that You work with DNxHD or DNxHR mediafiles, and monitoring on an HD display is allowed as far as I remember. At my company we tested Premiere with similiar projects and found it to perform worse than Avid, FWIW. Regards, Luca
