"Basically you have two timelines open, one above the other...and you can easily move stuff between them."
You can have multiple source 'selects' sequences open - viewed as timelines above 1 or more master timelines.
Keys to reassign:
Project Panel - 'Open in Source Monitor' to Shift+O
Source Monitor Panel - 'Open Sequence in TImeline' to Shift+O (different panels so can have same shortcut)
Window 'Source Monitor' to CMD+2 (or whatever - I think this is an FCP7 hangover for me)
Window 'Program Monitor' to CMD+4
Now you can open your master timeline, then choose your selects timeline(s) and click Shift+O to get them into source monitor and Shift+O again to get their timelines displayed. Drag the master timeline by it's name tab down to the bottom of the timeline panel - and they are pancaked.
CMD+2 will toggle between sources and CMD+4 will toggle between master timelines.
You can overwrite/insert from source to record, or drag & drop, or copy & paste. For insert/overwrite it is the source track selection that is used - program track selection is ignored.
I expect you'll want a bigger monitor pretty soon though...
