Depends on your work, really. We're about to move from Windows to Mac and I asked a valued colleague about his experience. He said he has one trashcan MacPro and isn't sure he'd buy another. It seems mostly a financial consideration - "You can buy two smoking [iMac] machines for the price of one of those [MacPros]" - but his editing platform may also play into it, as he works primarily in Adobe CC. He says he's buying 4 systems this year and they'll all be fully-loaded iMacs.
His company does commercials and short form (they're REALLY busy every two years, which may tell you what kind of work they do). They share a Terrablock for storage and send pictures to Flanders monitors, all through Thunderbolt expansion boxes. Their work is mostly in HD, but when he's worked in 4k, "Our iMac handles it well but not as well as the trashcan. So if you're wanting fast realtime playback in 4k I'd go with at least one trashcan. It makes a difference. I've tried all three systems out on the same project (4k short film) and my [cheese grater MacPro] tower was useless. The iMac is workable. The trashcan was like I was editing 1080."
So your mileage may vary.
