Re: [Avid-L2] OT: audio Conversion service

For 78 RPM records, there is also a completely different EQ curve from RIAA found in modern phono stages, often it was just flat. Here is the kind of switchable phono preamp you need to transfer 78s correctly. My Dad had a Motorola hiifi (not stereo) with selectable turnover and rolloff switches to correctly eq the myriad of "standards" prior to everyone agreeing to the RIAA EQ curve in the late 50s.

And if you want to try to unravel the EQ to be correct in post, there is a chart on this page that gives all the 78 specs according to record brand and vintage.

If you have to ship them, keep in mind that 78s will shatter. Pack them like museum objects.

No 78 on our turntable. So I thought I could just capture at 45 or 33 and do the conversion in ProTools. Then I remembered there was a separate needle for 78s. You had to flip it over (age showing) when you played a 78 on an old turntable. So I'm checking around to see if anyone I know has one.

Thanks, Terry.  Let me know about the turntable.  I would like it if Alphadogs could do it.

You can email me if this is taking up too much L2 bandwidth on an off topic thread.
