Change is a 10 year thing in our industry.
1945 - 1955 conversion to monochrome
1955 - 1965 conversion ntsc
1965 - 1975 conversion to pal as rest of world catches up
1975 - 1985 conversion to 1" from quad
1985 - 1995 conversion to digital and from composite to component
1995 - 2005 conversion to HD
2005 - 2015 conversion to digital delivery
2015 - 2025 I hope is about HDR and highframe rate as much as pixel
count increases
That last one has been the most important in terms of motivating sales
of sets. The big leap for most people was plasma tvs not just because of
the larger screen sizes but by the neccesity to feed big screens with
better images. I have taxi drivers who ask me if HDMI is better than
Display Port when they pick me up at a post house now. No one ever asked
me about component cables before plasma tvs became mainstream.
And despite half the guys here assurances to the contrary, I have stood
in front of 4K and 8K tvs and been BLOWN AWAY by the image quality. 4K
is happening and 8K is not far behind. To argue they shouldn't happen
because of economics is another discussion but let's not base our future
image expectations on cost, had we done that we wouldn't have colour tv
or hd.
It's natural that as a technology matures the impact of the new is
reduced. The difference between no tv and tv is immeasurable. The
difference between monochrome and colour tv is immense - much greater
than the difference between SD and HD. HD - 4k - 8K yes less of a
difference but a difference non-the less and one that does remove the
boundary between viewer and image. Next up HDR and High fps.
Again we have luddites against high fps based on our outmoded views that
50Hz = reality tv 24Hz = quality film entertainment but that's just us
old people. The kids HATE 3:2 pull down as much as I hate PAL flicker.
Let's not as a group of professionals protecting our self interests say
'hey tv is good enough lets not improve it anymore'.
I hate working on 3d stereo films, I don't much like watching them
either - but that doesn't mean they are bad or shouldn't be made, nor
does it mean I'll sit in my bedroom watching a 14" monochrome portable
tv listening to a single 2 inch hi-fidelity speaker.
