I'm on a Mac SNDX Ver 6.5.4.7. Here are the results of taking two channels of -20db, 0vu tone and multing them in an audio mixdown. Monitoring in Mono results in different mixdown summing when doing stereo or dual mono mixdowns. Perhaps this is an element to what you are seeing. I adopted the practice of monitoring in mono when doing all my summing mixdowns to make stereo tracks into mono and then I add -6db level correction.
Monitor Direct, Stereo Mixdown results in 2 channels at 0vu
Monitor Direct, Dual Mono Mixdown results in 2 channels at 0vu
Monitor Direct, Mono Mixdown results in 1 channel at +6vu
Monitor Stereo, Stereo Mixdown results in 2 channels at 0vu
Monitor Stereo, Dual Mono Mixdown results in 2 channel at 0vu
Monitor Stereo, Mono Mixdown results in 1 channel at +6vu
Monitor Mono, Stereo Mixdown results in 2 channels at +3vu
Monitor Mono, Dual Mono Mixdown results in 2 channels at +3vu
Monitor Mono, Mono Mixdown results in 1 channel +6vu
0vu=-20db on Avid audio meter
+3vu=-17db on Avid audio meter
+6vu=-14db on Avid audio meter
