Do you have the markers window open? Sometime around Ver. 6 I noticed that if the markers window is open a preview or an insert edit would cause the program to crash after the edit. After hitting preview and realizing I had markers open even aborting the preview would crash Avid. I didn't try with a assemble edit but I bet it is the same thing.
I'm not sure if that bug ever got fixed. Sometimes it seemed it worked and other times it would crash. If you have markers open close them during digital cuts.
