[Avid-L2] How to judge perforrmance of Background Rendering?

I'm running a mid 2012 MacPro 12core 2.66GHz OS 10.8.5 Avid Media Composer 8.3.1 and have been using background rendering successfully the past couple weeks.  Today it seemed to be stalling.  I did a test on a single safe color limit effect over an effecty open sequence.  When I used background rendering the Activity monitor show 20 to 30 % CPU in Act monitor but when I don't use background rendering and render in Avid the traditional way Act Monitor shows between 200 and 500% CPU.   I set the priority of the background render to high but no noticeable change.  I do see the AvidDMFSupportSvc running at 150 to 200% when rendering the same effect.  Is it reasonable to assume that this is normal background behavior?

When I render in to out of the rest of the shows safe color limit effect I see Avid's CPU percentage peaking at 1,600% going up and down during the render.  When I am monitoring the background render I'm not doing anything in Avid to pull processor priority away.  Curious what others have seen with how efficent background rendering is.  I had started to do all my rendering in the background to allow for further Avid work but it seems if I don't need access to Avid it's faster by a sizable amount of time to not use background render.
