RE: [Avid-L2] Wrong Format issue Gh4 4k AVC footage on AMA Link

Would Bouke's MP4 to QT application do the same thing for $10?  Haven't tried with GH4 but use it all the time on gopro .mp4s and it works a treat:

Subject: Re: [Avid-L2] Wrong Format issue Gh4 4k AVC footage on AMA Link

Jason,

I ran onto this in January and posted about it:

MC 8.3, UHD/4K 23.976 project
2014 Mac Pro (tube) 8 core, AMD 700s GPU, 32 GB RAM

Anyone have experience with Panasonic GH4 footage? I have a batch of 23.976 UHD/4K footage shot with this camera and when I AMA it into Media Composer, the clips come in with good audio but "wrong format" for picture (looks like the "media offline" title, only "wrong format").

This GH4 footage plays fine in Premiere Pro.

R3D UHD footage plays in the same project **, so I wonder if there is an AMA plug-in I am missing? I didn't see anything GH4 related on the AMA page on Avid's web site.

** The proxy modes are either 1/4 or 1/16. The R3DUHD footage plays fine at 1/16 but stutters badly at 1/4. Premiere Pro plays the same R3D footage with no dropped frames at 1/2 res. I guess I am disappointed that the Avid doesn't use the MP's horsepower to play the footage smoothly, and that Avid only offers 1/4 and 1/16 proxy modes. I am glad that Avid finally gave us greater than HD frame sizes natively. But with the limited testing that I have done, PP still has much better playback of UHD / 4K footage. Disappointing.

Appreciate any help on the GH4 bit above.

Note that If you use the .MOV wrapper in the GH-4, Avid sees (AMAs) the footage just fine.  I had tested GH4 footage ahead of time and it worked fine.  I didn't realize that there was a choice of wrapper in the GH-4 menu and thus when the footage came in as MP4 I had the same surprise you are having.

I never solved the problem, ended up transcoding to ProRes (HD) in Premiere to cut in Avid...

Then, someone posted this as a potential workaround:

I posted this here in December about a similar "wrong format" error with MP4 footage from another popular mirrorless camera, the Sony a7S. The same solution may work for you.

There is a demo version.

I didn't try this as I had moved on, but maybe it will help you?

Hi Everyone,

I just upgraded a few Avids upto 8.4 tonight and the first thing we needed to do was to AMA footage we think was shot using a Panasonic Gh 4 4k AVC codec which appears as .MP4 file. The footage appears to link but shows up as Wrong Format appears. Does anyone have a solution. Is there an AMA plug-in I can't locate or a driver that is hiding somewhere. I have installed the Panasonic AMA plugin that doesn't seem to work.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
