There is one exception to your rule, and that incidentally applies to ISIS7000.
That system is build around 1 system director(file manager for simplicity) and separate, independent crates for storage.
Once the system directors are gracefully shut down, the storage can be shut down with the method mentioned by John - literally pulling the plug(well Avid suggests 1 plug removed first, the other 2 next - this for each crate, but shutting down all 3 at once is OK too, as in the case of turning off the UPS that powers it).
This is no different than turning off external storage AFTER you shut down your computer.
Hence my question to john as of what type of ISIS is he on.
cheers,
BG

Unplugging ANY drive while it's spinning AND while the system it is connected to is ON is a recipe for disaster, and anyone who uses a computer should know this.
ALWAYS shut down the system first, then turn off the spinning (but not reading/seeking) drives. On Fri, Jul 17, 2015 at 12:16 PM, Robert Lawson avidrhl@gmail.com [Avid-L2] <Avid-L2@yahoogroups.com> wrote:
Step carefully, John.
Shutting down an ISIS System incorrectly can be disastrous. The advice in this thread is all good.On Fri, Jul 17, 2015 at 4:09 PM Bogdan Grigorescu bogdan_grigorescu@yahoo.com [Avid-L2] <Avid-L2@yahoogroups.com> wrote:what model of ISIS are you on John?BG

So this whole time I've been watching AEs on Unitys etc... actually go to computer screen and actually shut the san down there I've been mislead. All that time shutting down wasted!!! All they needed to do was pull the plug from the wall. The shut down time seemed to take longer than the restart on the old Unitys so I've been waiting more than twice as long as I had too all these years. Who can I bill for this, oh wait I was on the clock anyways so maybe there is an upside to the actual computer shut down.
Somebody please rescue this thread from the moronic turn I've made!!!

When I took the ISIS maintenance class from avid, we were taught to pull the plug on all the power supplies in a specific sequence. At least your guy uses a switch. :-). JB

He was taught to hit the power on the UPS feeding the Isis, which is an APC unit. He was told to hold down the power button on the UPS for 20 seconds to shut it down. WTF that can't be the proper way to restart an Isis. That's shutting off the UPS feeding the Isis right. Is there some potential smart ups rigging that shutting down the UPS powering the Isis would tell the Isis to elegantly shut down? This makes no sense. How is this different from pulling the power cord off the Isis? I'm not much on Avid storage proper procedure but I figure you go to the Isis terminal and shut things down there like the file system etc... like you would a Unity. I don't see how I'm wrong in my concern here but the AE swears the outside engineer told him to do it this way. Then when the Isis boots enter the proper passwords.I'll be amazed if yanking the power to the Isis is an acceptable method here.John Moore
