[Avid-L2] Some LUT comparisons with Un LUTed Waveform Screen grabs

Here are some tests I've done with my current project.  These are screen grabs from my Tek Waveform.  There is the ama'd F-55 4K footage with and without the Sony S3 gamma to Rec 709.  Also there are Resolve baked out DNX-175s with no LUT and the ArriLogC applied.  I intend to find a proper Sony S3 LUT for Resolve.  I think someone had posted a link a while back with a Sony siite that had a LUT for this that I hope I can bring into Resolve.

Overall the Sony Avid LUT is similar to the Resolve LogC LUT.  What is surprising to me is how the bottom arc of the unluted clips is smushed down.  I would expect the LUT to lower things down but not remove the arc I see on Y the RGB channels.  If I just color corrected without the LUT the bottom arc is still there bit now I don't really know what to trust.  The LUTed clips look fine but the smushing makes me wonder if something like Dave H mentioned about losing detail/data when applying a LUT.  From a waveform perspective that bottom end arch flattening out is pretty drastic.  Image wise not so much but I'm curious what others think about the differences.  From what I see here its doing more than just stretching things out with a S curve to the gain.  Am I misinterpreting the smushing?  Is that part of a proper S Curve LUT restoration? John Moore
