Here's how we use MacCaption:
MacCaption generates both an .scc file (which is a separate network deliverable for us) and an AAF file.
The AAF file gets dropped into the data track in the Avid timeline.
We render out an OP1a file for delivery, which includes the captions.
In your case I'd guess that your captioning vendor imports your file into Avid, then re-exports a new file w. captions. I can't see how they can "add captions" to your file without totally unpacking it into audio and video files first.

The message is, "Splitter: bad or missing smpte info". They day they sometimes get errors when there is some DNX media mixed in with the ProRes file. Does it somehow just insert some header information/metadata to the existing file or does it back out a new file in the process?I can only think that we should send our raw file to the network for testing to eliminate that as a source for the new error "Splitter: bad or missing smpte info". It was noted that the original file we sent with the interleaved audio did not exhibit this error when run through XCode proxy generation. I am not familiar with XCode's inner workings either. Can anyone shed some light on this?
