Yes, that is a really big drawback.

Some of the hardware LUT boxes allow for select outputs to remain unprocessed.  For example, I believe the AJA LUT-box allows either of its HD-SDI or HDMI outputs to remain 'clean' -- while the other output is processed by the cube.  In that particular case, if your program monitor supported HDMI (or if you used an HDMI to HD-SDI converter), you could route the AJA LUT-box's HD-SDI output to your scopes.

I view the use of a Display LUT on a top filler layer in a timeline as a kind of two-prong kluge:

On one hand, with the use of calibration software (CalMAN, Light Illusion, etc...), it is an inexpensive way to dial-in an external monitor regardless of its calibration features (assuming, of course, that it is able to display most or all of sRGB).  There are a large number of scenarios where this would be useful.  And although it would be very cumbersome, you could monitor the layer below the LUT in order to look at external scopes.

The other way to look at it, at this precise moment in time, is that this approach maybe represents a stop-gap measure that allows one to wait for the next generation of hardware LUT boxes to become available (IBC 2015 or NAB 2016).  More specifically, I'm hoping more of the next gen of LUT boxes support UHD, 4k, HDMI 2.0, HDR, ect..

An in-desirable effect, if you ask me.

Thank you both for that information.
Somehow I missed that.
Need to do some testing, but looks like it might work.
