Thanks - I used the 'nuclear option' as Dave Spraker so delicately put it. Rebuilt the two failed machines from scratch. They're working great now, and I'll clone the drives as I incrementally add back the security items and additional user accounts. I think it was a permissions issue relating to having too many admin accounts. (?)
