Re: [Avid-L2] 23.98 vs 24

Shoot 23.98. Post 23.98. Mix @23.98. Layback at 23.98. Do it all at 23.98. Then, the very very last step is to pull up to 24 for theatrical release. It works so smoothly and every facility is use to working that way. Shooting 24 is going to screw stuff up. And tell the producers that it will likely cause overages in post because of the screw ups. The last project I posted at true 24 was in 2004 and it was a nightmare. The sound and music crews worked at 23.98/29.97 so out of the Avid I would have to pull everything down. They they would work. Then going back into the Avid we had to pull everything back up. It was during that show that Avid introduced true 23.98 projects. The show we did next we did the entire project at 23.98. Shoot, post, mix, grade, etc. Then last step pulled it all up to 24. It was so easy that we have never considered doing it any other way, ever. So talk to you sound and music departments. Talk to your finishing facility. Talk to every member of the crew that the DPs choice is going to effect.

All the digitally-shot movies I've ever done have been shot at 23.98, and not 24. But of course, the DP is jonesing for 24fps so he doesn't have to worry about certain lighting flicker issues.

As far as I can tell, the transcode would still use the same DNxHD flavor (in my case, DNxHD 115) whether it's 23.98 or 24. But I wanted to cast around for anyone who has actually cut and finished a movie shot at 24fps for a theatrically-released feature in case I'm overlooking anything.
