[Avid-L2] Re: Cinema Display Color Calibration

Which Cinema? Current or old? Matte or glossy? I've found the efforts to accurately calibrate these screens to be a pointless endeavor. Generally the "Cinema" profile is pretty close.

Odds are if you have 2 side-by-side from different lots, they will be farther apart. LED backlights will look different than fluorescent backlights. For example, I'm currently grading a small indie and have a brand new Dell 27" (LED), 20" ACD and a Panasonic 17" broadcast monitor. I've gotten fairly close matches. However, I've found that reds in particular show up differences. The LED screen shows truer reds, but they almost look bluish to the eye. That's because it's reproducing color outside of the normal gamut. The ACD and the Panasonic show reds that are slightly orange, which is about what we've been used to seeing all these years.

Also different application interfaces will skew their color display to the viewer in comparison to each other. For example, a QuickTime movie will look different in QT Player 7 or X, Resolve, FCP X, AE, MC, etc. I'm not talking about gamma differences but rather actual colors. That's because of how each app talks to the Mac's color sync mechanism.

In general, if you have a new system and are using a newish Apple 27" Cinema or Thunderbolt screen, left on the default "Cinema" profile, it *should* look fine for editing purposes without further calibration.

Good luck.
