John it's not being broadcast at that spec, just tested. We're not really delivering SD to the beeb, we're delivering HD full frame 1920x1080/50i. But they test using the SD Harding not the HD Harding. Others require the HD Harding to be used. I'm not sure why this is the case but it is the case.

720x576/486(480) is the Active Picture Area right? As has been suggested in this thread for 702x576/480 it's really just cropping the horizontal edges isn't it? Doesn't this add black edges on the sides or is the 702 horizontal pixels stretched back out to the full 720 on output thereby eliminating any noticeable blanking shifts.
It kinda sounds like the Harding boxes are stuck in an old obsolete standard and haven't been re-engineered for the modern era. I can't believe that's true but then why the 702 spec? And don't get me started on the whole Harding Mafia. While there may be some truth to it's claims I would have killed or at least spasm-ed millions back in my form over content editing days of Eye on LA and MTV. As far as I know no one was harmed by my editing of the 3D Swimsuit Spectacular at least from a legal perspective. ;-)

704 X 576 (480 NTSC): CCIR-601 1/1 D1 or cropped CCIR-601 D1. Most of the time, people call it 1/1 D1. Very rare, you can see this resolution as 702 X 576/480. It is the TV Broadcast resolution

"If coming from an SD downconvert the BBC will set menu item 947 - H-Pixel on an SR deck to 702 and not 720,"
Could you elaborate on the menu item 947? PAL SD frame size is 720x576 right? What does setting item 947 to 702 accomplish on the downconvert? Never had to deal with this in my NTSC SD world.
