RE: [Avid-L2] OT...Sky Delivery questions for those of you across the pond.

When the BBC run a Harding, this is how their decks are set up, don't ask me why, but that's what we've been told to do with our decks in order to match how they run their tests.  I guess it is cropping the edges slightly to ensure their are no blanking problems on any material.  This is what has been fed back to us directly from them.

I'm not sure about that bit…

"If coming from an SD downconvert the BBC will set menu item 947 - H-Pixel on an SR deck to 702 and not 720,"

Could you elaborate on the menu item 947?  PAL SD frame size is 720x576 right?  What does setting item 947 to 702 accomplish on the downconvert?  Never had to deal with this in my NTSC SD world.

Hi Dave,

No one really uses the white flash but like they say, it's optional.  If they do it will be at the beginning and I've never seen one at the end.

Clock-wise It's like you say, no digital numbers, no fancy imagery but a regular clock will do, sorry I don't have one to hand to give you, all the ones I use are branded by the facility. They don't want any technical info on the slate though so no mention of audio layout or aspect ratio etc. just programme ID, programme name and episode number and if it's multi-part then it should say part 1 of 2 and part 2 of 2 etc for each part's slate.

One thing to note if you are delivering SD tape i.e. digibeta, then Sky do things differently to all other UK broadcasters and want their VITC to be on line 17 and 19 instead of lines 19 and 21 so set your decks accordingly.

Timings won't include the living hold.  Normally I put on the record report "dur: xx'xx'' + 10 sec hold" or something to that effect.  So duration would be last frame of pics minus 10 seconds. That's the TRT or total run time of the programme and that's what should go on the record reports.

There should be no tone on the clock.  Bars and Tone should be 1kHz @ -18dBFS tone and 100% EBU bars from 09:58:00:00 - 09:59:30:00 and the clock should be silent from 09:59:30:00 - 09:59:57:00 then three seconds of black before pictures st art on 10:00:00:00.
Lineup tone is usually drop tone with the left channel interrupted.

You will also require a Harding pass certificate for anything going to sky (or any of the main UK broadcasters).  This is a test for PSE or photosensitive epilepsy and the Harding machine is software designed to check for various flashing patterns that could induce a fit in a susceptible individual.  It's a massive pain in the arse but it s a requirement that a certificate is provided with the tape. You can get an SD and an HD harding but I think Sky require an SD one so either run from a digi or from the SD downconvert of an HDCAM SR or the like.  Be careful what version you use as a pass on one version can fail on another - the joy is endless.  Sky are on v2.5 I think but it's best to check with them first to cut down on problems.  If coming from an SD downconvert the BBC will set menu item 947 - H-Pixel on an SR deck to 702 and not 720, i don't think Sky do this but it might be worth checking so that you can get your setup as close to theirs as possible.

I am delivering a show for Sky in the UK & internationally, and had a couple questions.

1) Do most of you use the 2 frames white, before and after programme?  The document I have says it's optional, but do most still use it?

2) Can anyone point me to an approved "Ident. Clock"?  If I understand correctly, it should be round, but it must not have a sweeping hand, and cannot use digital numbers. &n bsp;I will be delivering on both Tape and File, and therefore I believe I need a 30 second version and a 7 second version. As I will be delivering in both PAL 25 and 23.98, I need clocks that conform to both frame rates.  Any recommendations on what Sky likes is greatly appreciated.

3) I have found a couple of ident clocks on the internet, but they include tones.  I believe Sky doesn't want any tones other than if you use the two frame white, and then only on the first frame of that white. Can someone comment if this is correct?

4) When putting show timing in slates...Do you include the "Living Holds" in that duration? &nbs p;In the duration of the Break?  I will be delivering a series of two part shows, with a single break.  Should my slate duration be the time from top of show to the end of the 2nd act living hold (credits)? Or should it be the total duration of the breaks without the living holds, plus the duration from the end of the first part to the start of picture on the second part? (hope that's not too confusing.)

Any help or comments is appreciated in reducing the number of QC cycles on the show.
