it's more of a broadcast legacy kind of thing
-many facilities were(and likely still are) wired for 4CH analog audio to accommodate the VTRs du jour: betaSP, Digi, HDCAM, DVCPRO(HD), DVCAM, etc.
-the goal of every NLE manufacturer was to emulate a VTR from the I/O perspective for easy integration
-more recent VTRs, like SONY HDCAM SR, still have the same number of analog audio channels:4, again for backwards compatibility reasons
-so for 1 to 1 replacement, some of these legacy connections are still necessary
-there was AES i/o on the NitrisDX in the form of DB25 breakout cables, so the designers did not overlap any coax AES connections
Don't get me wrong, I don't agree with Avid's decision, but there are factors that probably influenced it.
I mentioned in the past that SDI is obsolete and should be gone by now, replaced with HDMI. I guess the industry resists sudden changes...
cheers,
BG
