>But no, someone figured that Nitris DX had all the wrong I/O choices. Sure.
Can't disagree with anything you've said. In fact, you've articulated the issues quite succinctly. At the same time, the market penetration of Resolve does suggest the utility of an I/O solution that works with both software products.
Not that there's any exclusivity, but Blackmagic and Avid have spent a good deal of energy working together to make Resolve round-tripping less painful. And if I'm not mistaken, Blackmagic was one of the first 3rd party companies to support DNxHR.
This new chapter of 'cooperation' may, or may not, have further implications. No, I am not suggesting a co-venture on an hardware I/O product is going to ultimately lead to a merger or acquisition (although I suppose it's not impossible). Rather, I'm quietly wondering if this co-venture might lead to Resolve having deeper hooks into Media Composer, like the way the Fusion Plugin for Media Composer works.
This would obviously be a welcomed outcome for a good-many Media Composer editors and colorists. Conversely, I would imagine that it would not be particularly good news for the excellent and well-supported Filmlight/Baselight plugin product. Of course, this is all pure conjecture.
One thing seems clear, Avid does not seem particularly interested in making-good on their promise to differentiate the Symphony Option. For many years, we have asked, they have promised, and they have failed to deliver, Symphony Option features that are even remotely relevant to the media we work with, and the workflow challenges we face.
An increased level of interoperability between Resolve and the Symphony Option could conceivably begin to address the lack of differentiation, as well as save Avid the massive expenditures related to internally building and maintaining a grading solution that belongs in this century. Let's face it, the horses have left the barn, and for a significant number of users, nothing will be replacing Resolve (free or paid) in the near future.
In any case, it will be interesting to watch if. and how, this evolves.
