Thanks Michael (apologies for slightly terse response last week). Actually doing what you say - making ONLY the zoom category bezier does give improved results - less swooping - making it more useable - but it still does not follow a linear path, so some moves look swoopily unacceptable.
A response from Avid would be helpful.
