What colour is the waveform in the Timeline - black or grey? Could be an odd sample rate.

I'm stumped. Cutting a sizzle and the producers sent me an mp4 of some pick ups with the host, additional stand ups.
When I import it into MC (5.5.3) - I can't hear the audio. Video is fine. If I cut a snippet into the timeline, I can SEE the audio waveform, it's there, it's large, but I can't hear anything.
I've checked the rest of the sequence - I can play a clip immediately prior, and hear that, so it's not my headphones and it's not the sequence. I don't have any tracks muted or disabled.
I checked the mp4, and the audio was recorded or compressed to AAC. I've tried exporting only the audio and converting it to AIFF and WAV formats (both of which I can monitor and hear perfectly at the desktop level) but I can't hear those either when I import them.
I tried transcoding the import on the off-chance it's got something to do with frame-rate that wasn't properly handled during import. (The pick-ups are 29.97, the project is 23.98.) But that does nothing either. The video is fine always, the audio fails to register. The weird thing is MC obviously recognizes it - sees it's there, but isn't playing it. Dunno.
Any help? Many thanks in advance.
Stumped.
