"When you can shoot on the iPhone, edit on the iPad (in FCPX) and post to iTunes, it will be a very different universe."
And then push around via Apple TV or to your friggin iWatch!. Couldn't agree more.
"Forget Hollywood movies, that's a drop in the bucket. "
Totally agree again. I was at a Sony/Avid 4k thing the other day. Besides a horrible demo of MC 8.something, it was cool to be reminded just how good Media Composer is for that work. Man, the depth of the software is amazing. I do wish the demo was better. It's been a long time since I was hired to do any MC work (rare to find an MC suite around here) but, damn, if that software didn't look great.
But, people like me would use maybe 30% of it's power. It's changing out there. X is a lot more powerful in many ways than MC for a wider variety of work. My work has gone pretty much 95% to X and 5% Premiere only when forced to. Where I once was doing 85% spots for broadcast, that has changed to 30% or less. I am doing a series of 3 spots over the next two weeks that will be aired at some point, but the focus from the client now is web with an active link on the end tag. GoPro and Red. Going through X and then Resolve at some point. But the producer, knowing what X can do, has no problem with me editing and doing the color in the box. It was me who added the Resolve session for the broadcast versions. Non-editor folks around X are starting to notice the product. Remember when folks said "I need two days of Avid time..."? A lot of them had no clue what I was cutting on, just that Avid was THE name. What happened? This isn't a "feature list" debate anymore.
Not sure what this all means, but outside big broadcast, the landscape is really changing. If Apple keeps going forward with X and the surrounding services, it gets even more interesting.
