Oddly enough I've just gone through two years of tricky times as both avid and Autodesk my main equipment suppliers have both struggled to adapt to lower price points and an aging code base.
Both I think have come out the other end with better products and a modern core from which to advance. What we have all lived through is the tricky adolescent period following the tricky childhood where none of it really worked properly.
The future is either comfortable middle age and retirement or new blood and rejuvenation. Your comment of 'new to avid' is the key. Just as there are few flame artists under 45 are there new young editors adopting avid? An avid free might be the key as I know young kids (up to 30 - yes I'm getting old) love Davinci and nuke but my core toolset barely gets a mention.
My son has just moved to flame from nuke and is blown away by the raw speed and power but says no one knows in the nuke rooms where the opinion is flame is dead. Edit wise he loves avid but says everyone he knows cuts in fcpx...
It will take more than easy licensing to change the younger mindset. It's gonna need roadshows, free drinks and evangelizing.
