I've re-read the thread here a few times and feel I have a reasonable handle on what's needed to make surround monitoring in a way that I need and can afford. I've investigated the components mentioned and am encouraged that there is a fairly broad spectrum of gear available to fit within my budget: $1200 to $2400.
