There is an Avid bug that if a multigroup is relinked this behavior will happen and matchframes won't work. In order to avoid this if a multigroup is offline you need to put it in an empty bin and show referenced clips. Then relink the master clips themselves and the multigroup will continue to match properly after that relink. Just highlighting the group or multigroup and relinking will bring the clips online but will result in the funky match framing nonsense you are describing.
