I pointed Martin over here... so hopefully he'll be back to follow up ...
(http://liftgammagain.com/forum/index.php?forums/baselight.22/ is probably a better place to ask questions for Baselight)
Again, as a poor imitation in the meantime, I think he's talking about the fact that the grade is coming back to the Avid as metadata and hasn't had to go through a rendering pass in full Baselight (i.e. we're mostly not working uncompressed so there is a decompression / recompression cycle in full Baselight from DNX or whatever).
Download the trial, although it requires a bit of time to get into the nitty gritty. There's a lot of keyboard shortcuts that are worth learning.
Here's a quick guide off the top of my head, if you are looking at it:
1. Set your REW and FFW avid keyboard shortcuts to F5 and F6 - these (and only these) then work for jumping between instances of the plug in from the Baselight GUI.
2. Get into using the tab key / spacebar combo to get into the GUI from the avid effect editor pop-up (also works for Avid FX and Titles). I have effect editor as F4 so I hit F4 then tab then spacebar to get into the GUI quickly. From there F5/F6 jump back and forward one grade.
3. In the GUI I like to use the 'Film' grade first off... setting basic exposure / contrast / saturation, by default you are grading 'inside' the matte (there is no matte). Make a grade to take saturation down to 0.
4. Activate an RGB matte by hitting R- this'll change interface to pulling a matte which, as it is fully black, will mask your grade.
5. Draw a rectangle on the picture in the GUI to select some colours - you are pulling a matte. ('Pick from source' has to be enabled above the RGB selectors. Draw a different rectangle and pull a different key.
6. Remove the matte by right clicking on the (now blue to indicate it has values) 'MatteRGB' button to 'reset operator entry' - there is now no Matte so grade is fully visible
7. Add a shape operator to this layer with S - then draw a shape on the picture - defaults to freehand. When you close one shape hit Q to enable create new shape - draw another shape and close it.
8. Use S to toggle between shape drawing in the matte tool and grading inside the matte. You can also select an operator for the outside.
9. Space bar to play - which should be realtime until you add quite a bit of processing.
10. Reset the shape operator
11. Hit the U key to create a 'DKey' - a 3D keyer
12. Draw rectangle over a bit of the picture to create a matte. Draw a second rectangle and another 'volume' is added to the keyer. etc...
13. Use O to toggle between Matte and Layer output
14. CMD+W will close the GUI and take you back to MC - simple grade should play in real time.
Now, if you're interest is piqued but you got completely lost, search out the tutorials & manual (manual is available via help within the GUI). It is a whole app within a plug-in, somewhat like Boris Red is, so it's not an easy learn... but it is worth it.
Ask questions here or in LGG - where there are much more experienced users.
